About the Event:
The UBC Scholars in Prison Engagementship (under the UBC Human Rights Collective) is pleased to announce a film screening of the critically acclaimed documentary “All Static & Noise” in partnership with the UBC Social Justice Centre. The film revolves around Uyghurs and Kazakhs who are arbitrarily detained in Chinese “re-education” camps – where survivors and their families risk everything to expose the truth. A ‘must see’ film for everyone interested in the survival and recovery of human beings whose only resources are hope and courage. Following the screening, there will be a Q&A section with two activists for the Ughyur cause.
Jewher Ilham is a Uyghur activist and daughter of Ilham Tohti, a Uyghur scholar who was arrested by the Chinese government 12 years ago. Jewher has been vocal about his case, advocating for his release.
Darren Byler is an anthropologist and professor of International Studies at SFU. His work focuses on Uyghur dispossession, and he is involved with the Xinjiang Documentation Project at UBC.
